What are VOC's?

Indoor air pollution can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air filled with mold, pollen, pet dander, dust and Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOC’s) which may cause long and short-term health effects. Improving indoor air with an Alen Air Purifier is a great defense against VOCs, as well as allergy and asthma symptoms.

What are VOC’s?

VOC’s are organic compounds emitted as gases from a variety of household products, such as: paint, carpeting, copiers/printers, laminated furniture, wood preservatives, paint thinner, glues, permanent markers, cosmetics and certain aerosols and plastics. The common causes of indoor VOC's are a lack of sufficient ventilation and air exchanges with outdoor air. Symptoms of VOC exposure may include anything from headaches and nausea, to loss of coordination or even liver damage. Adding an air purifier, along with other steps, can help control VOC’s in your home.

Source Control, Ventilation and Air Cleaning with a HEPA Style Air Purifier for VOC Control

VOC’s can be kept under control with both source control, ventilation and air cleaning with a HEPA style air purifier. If at all possible, simply removing the sources of VOC vapors (ie, closing paint cans, discontinuing use of aerosols, etc) can help to reduce the concentration of VOC’s. Increasing ventilation may be especially beneficial in modern, energy efficient homes which are built relatively air tight to save on energy costs. In these homes, HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Condition) systems do not pull in air from the outside as commercial units do, which limits ventilation. Meaning, if VOC's are present they are simply circulated around the house, not removed. Allowing for outdoor air to circulate with indoor air does help to lessen VOC concentration, but it also introduces new particles or air pollution which may trigger allergy or asthma symptoms, as well as other respiratory issues.

The key to controlling VOC’s is air cleaning and removing chemicals from the air you breathe without introducing new particles to your indoor environment. The best way to accomplish this is with a HEPA style air purifier. Each Alen Air Purifier is designed to capture up to 99% of airborne pollutants and particles, improving indoor air quality and lowering pollution levels.

Many customers with sensitivity to VOCs or air pollution have seen a difference after adding an Alen Air Purifier to their environment such as T from Lake Charles, LA:

“Currently living in an apartment, I was unable to control VOCs from neighboring apartment dwellers. ENTER MY A350 Air Purifier - I'm wondering what took me so long to get one of these, as I have suffered with allergies and asthma for over 50 years. (I will miss it when I travel.) Don't hesitate to invest in this excellent air purifier. Apparently, Alen has it all! I am hooked.”
